KANSAS SLAVERY AND THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

Richard Pitts, the director of the Wonder Workshop Children's Museum and host of the Dawn of Day PBS Documentary, will share information as it relates to the history of Africans, African-American slavery, and the Bleeding Kansas Underground Railroad. He will share slides that reveal where these sites are located, who these early Kansans were, and why they decided to enter the union of the United States as a free state. This presentation will help you tune into our common history as well as understand some of the legacies that present themselves in our lives today.

LUKE'S BABY SHOWER

If you are an expectant mom, join us for this special event! Luke's Baby Shower is a biannual event that offers pregnant moms the opportunities to learn safe sleep techniques for baby and to discover the community resources available to babies and their families. First arrivals the morning of the shower win free Pack 'n Plays. Additional door prizes are also awarded. Moms are welcome to bring a support person and childcare is provided. NINTH STREET – THE MOVIE

Ninth Street is an independent award winning film (1999) written by Junction City native Kevin Wilmott, a film director and screenwriter, as well as a professor of film at the University of Kansas. He is known for work focusing on black issues including Ninth Street, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America, Bunker Hill, and mostly recently BlacKkKlansman. Ninth Street is a film of historical transition depicting life in Junction City, Kansas circa 1969 in a small business district of joints and clubs that caters to nearby Fort Riley. It is a community in danger of losing its identity as a locally-owned, tradition-rich neighborhood. The movie stars Don Washington, Kevin Willmott, Isaac Hayes, Queen Bey, and Martin Sheen and is rated R. Ninth Street is a film available only in the library's archives. Come enjoy a special showing of this historical experience free of charge in the comfort of the library's Community Room.

PETERSON FARM BROTHERS LIVE!

The Peterson Farm Brothers are a young Kansas musical troupe with a wide internet following. They specialize in parodies of popular music with a farming twist. Their first effort, I'm Farming and I Grow It was a play on I'm Sexy and I Know It that went viral through social media. They have been performing ever since in addition to working on their family farm near Assaria. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the library's Reimagining Your Public Library building project.

RUN FOR THE WALL

Veterans from all wars and their supporters will leave California on their annual pilgrimage across the heartland of America to The Wall, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Their mission is to create a groundswell of support for American POW/MIAs from all wars, to honor the memory of those Killed in Action, and to help those injured by the war to heal. They will honor Junction City with an overnight stop that will begin with the flag line welcome followed by a ceremony in Heritage Park.
